5250 printer sessions do not recover properly - QTVDEVICE

After paper runs out, printer turned off during job, printer error, etc., printer session may not reconnect because AS400 did not shut down virtual job properly.  


When check NETSTAT, IP address is not there indicating device terminated session but when check WRKCFGSTS or WRKWTR device shows active.
This is an abnormal situation which indicates that job QTVDEVICE did not properly shut down the virtual device after the session terminated at the telnet layer


On V4R5 and V5R1, increase the number of QTVDEVICE jobs in CHGTELNA "number servers".  A rough rule of thumb is if they have:
50 users = run 10 QTVDEVICE jobs.
150 users = run 15-20 QTVDEVICE jobs.
500 users = run 25-50 QTVDEVICE jobs.
1000 users = run 50-100 QTVDEVICE jobs.

This is just an estimate because it seems that it depends on how active the telnet jobs are as well as how busy the host is.
